Initial sketches for Cyrillic characters [open/close]

Bliss was originally released in 1996 as a six weight family. ExtraLight was added five years later together with an expanded character set to include Central European languages. In 2004 Bliss was upgraded to the OpenType font format. This current release sees Bliss expand again with the addition of Greek and Cyrillic scripts across the whole family of weights.

Cyrillic lowercase zhe [open/close]

All three scripts share, in part, a common heritage in form, which can easily be seen through common characters. The lowercase though differs quite extensively. In the Greek lowercase all the characters except the omicron are different to Latin. With the Cyrillic lowercase, several characters are the same as Latin, whilst others appear to be strongly influenced by Latin.

While this visual continuity can help to harmonize the three scripts across the design of a font family, it can also make it difficult to maintian the individual integrity of each script. It needs to be remembered that each script has its own rhythm and structure; forcing the principles of Latin into either Greek or Cyrillic will not result in a successful character set.

Greek lowercase theta [open/close]

The simplicity and legibility of form, which underpins the design of the original Bliss font was applied to the design of the Greek and Cyrillic. Having begun with the essential underlying structure of each character, these forms were then harmonized and brought together as coherent scripts and then a complete family.
